A few questions on the Halo universe and franchise itself…

How would you compare Halo to other major science fiction franchises?

While I wouldn’t say the Halo is as huge as the Star Wars universe (yet – give it time!), it definitely has the potential to become as broad as that. In the same way that Star Wars captured the imagination of an entire generation, so too has Halo. I have no doubt the universe will continue to expand and go on to bigger, brighter things.

What part of this universe do you think is prime for deeper exploration in future stories and/or games?

There are lots of ways I would love to see the story of Halo explored, and Operation Chastity was an attempt at showing the war through the eyes of grunts on the ground. The Human-Covenant War would be exciting to explore from a completely Covenant perspective as we’ve seen lots of different angles from the human side so far. Equally, Greg Bear’s Forerunner trilogy is shaping up wonderfully. But deep down I think Halo really is a story about the Chief, and by broadening the universe with Halo 4 we will hopefully see whole new races, creatures and worlds. 343 have made a good call with that one.

If the official Halo movie were to arise out of limbo–“development hell”, what sort of story would you love to see told?

I would love to see a new, refined take on the story we know and love. Not a complete re-imagining or a ground-up retelling, but a trilogy of Halo movies with a streamlined story covering Reach to the Ark. Spin-off movies set in other parts of the universe would be wonderful but I think for a flagship movie effort, that’s the story to tell.

How do you feel about 343 Industries’ adopting of the Halo property from Bungie? Do you think they can do the Halo mythology justice?

343 Industries are already showing they have the ability to take the universe in new, interesting directions with Legends, Evolutions (and the associated motion comics) and the various new novel series. Anniversary will no doubt be a love letter to the original game and Halo 4 will be a whole new world to explore. I look forward to seeing what more they can bring to the table.

Of the Halo creations you’ve read, watched, or played previously, which one(s) have impacted you the most?

I think, of all the things we have seen from Halo media, the most affecting for me personally was the Halo 3 advertising campaign. The diorama sequence from the Believe campaign, Blomkamp’s Landfall shorts, and of course Starry Night. I still watch all those adverts and they give me goosebumps, only made better by my experience of the games surrounding them. The marketing for Halo games has always been excellent and continues to set new bars for quality. Love it!

If you could read one page of the ‘Halo Bible’, which would it be?

Only one? That’s mean. There are entire chapters I would love to devour whole. I guess if I had to pick one page, it would be the page regarding the early colonial history of the Sol system. I’m really up for learning about humanity’s roots in the Halo universe. Failing that, a look at the Warthog page, to prove once and for all that Warthogs can have their steering wheel on the right hand side!

Thanks, Peter, for taking the time to answer these questions and share your passion for Halo!

Be sure to check back – tomorrow’s topic:  “Bzzt!”  Here’s a little teaser:

And then I need you to get the hell off this mudball with him while we Orions move on to the next objective.  Now, I don’t know what you’ll do if you decide to stay here.  Maybe you can help some civilians escape, but that window is closing very fast.  Maybe you can dig a hole deep enough so that you won’t die in the glassing.
